Introduction

There are many different ways to reach the end, having your car on the road, legally and not falling foul of the hairy arm and checkered hat! This is what we did in order to comply with all the red tape, others may have done it differently, some I am sure have been misled and could have found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

I am 100% confident with this advice even though I have from time to time had duff information and had to persist even asking the same question of some authorities three times to get what I will call the logical quantified answer, unfortunately you almost need to know the answer to qualify their answers as "GOOD", when you do hit a rich vein of knowledge you know almost instinctively.

Please verify what I say but do heed any significant contradictions.

SORN

You need this form once you have your donor (assuming you are using a donor vehicle). Complete the form and you don't have to tax the vehicle while you strip it providing it is not on the road of course. Don't scrap the vehicle yet (paper work exercise), keep the logbook for when you go to book your Buildup Inspection / SVA Test.

Order

Quite a simple form to fill in, tick the boxes for what you want. The wheels and tyres were a good price. We purchased a sheet of stainless steel extra and made our boot lining and lid from this as well as the petrol tank mounting straps.

I see no problems here except the total cost.

4
VIN
I believe on the tapes of the 2b/4 it says use the invoice number followed by 13 other digits of your choice, making 17 in total. I did make a technical enquiry to Richard (Robin Hood) and was told just that. I made the call after calling the DVLA for the third time and asking how I got the "serial number" of the chassis (this will be the VIN) so I could fill the "Build Up Inspection" form. DVLA stated the builder should supply the chassis number so I did what Richard said.
5
Build Insurance

We did our built in a rented municipal garage. The thought of not insuring was never contemplated. Prior to ordering the kit I enquired about build insurance and our intended location but without a specific garage address, assured there was no problem we ordered our kit and a municipal garage. The week prior to collection I went to evoke the insurance and - No you can't do that, the garage must be at your address! Five phone calls later back with Adrian Flux we had our insurance. What went wrong with my 2 earlier calls I don't know to this day but the consultants (females) were adamant , the last call was the manager (a man) no problem and it wasn't.

You can get build insurance on the Vin number, the engine number or the invoice number. Now you can use the Vin number and stamp the chassis for added security, well peace of mind.

BUVIR

Six weeks prior to our selected SVA date I took the Build Up Vehicle Inspection Report form to DVLA Reading with the Application to register and licence our Robin Hood. I was assured there would be no problem with the inspection as there was plenty of time. Our SVA date was 2 weeks later than we planned due to staff training. The week prior to our SVA I rang and rang and rand and you know rang. Eventually I got through on Friday and we are at SVA on Monday you better come now - No, you should have asked earlier - I did 8 weeks ago - Oh, in that case we will ask SVA Yeading to do the BUVIR.

Build up vehicle inspection form

Fill in the serial number of the chassis using the VIN as described above other wise the form is simple.

7
SVA Insurance

Now the norm is to pay about £30 for a days insurance to cover that special journey to the SVA center. Most Insurance companies can arrange this for you. The insurance will be issued on either the chassis number as above or the purchase receipt number.

We took an alternative insurance a bit of a risk, we had to pass SVA within 30 days or we would for fit all the policy premium. It is obvious the Insurers wanted to limit their exposure as they were not getting £30 each time we went to SVA and it's easy to see that if our car would not pass in that time then the insurers would not want to hold it on cover at all. All the small print is in the big paragraph below.

On the community pages you will see some owners say they have had insurance for over the 30 days. I feel all insurance companies will follow a similar type of clause, they want to make money, they are not there for your benefit, they will calculate risk. Yes there will be some better policies and terms but look close at the small print. My best guess is the donor vehicle registration number was used

SVA

Disposal

Now you tel DVLA you have disposing of the vehicle when you register your Hood. It is important you keep the registration document with the dog tags (VIN plate)

This document will be sent through the post.

Registering

After SVA you register the car and have a registration number.

Note, you will now be given an age related plate if you have a single donor vehicle and have fulfilled the criteria in the build up inspection. DVLA no longer give you the donors registration number, you can transfer it but there are costs and you must have registered it as a cherished number while the vehicle had an MOT.

9
Number Plates

The DVLA will give you a form like this one.

Take this to your local number plate manufacturer with your identity, driving licence, and domestic bill and you can purchase your number plates.

10
Road Insurance
Motor vehicle insurance is issued against the vehicle registration number, PNC checks etc. So only after SVA and you have registered the car, can you supply your insurance company the registration number and complete the temporary insurance / cover note provided to date or effect new insurance. The insurance is then for road use as in any production car however you will probably opt for a limited mileage to reduce the premium.

Since publishing the above an area of the the UK had a stipulation from DVLA that a MOT was required prior to SVA, this letter is DVLA reply.

No MOT is required prior to SVA for any kit car and my advice re chassis numbre was confirmed by the manager signing the letter below.
