"Why do I need a
Firewall?" |
 |
Hackers, script kiddies etc. like to
break-into systems, steal data, make your private data public, leave their
mark upon the system, or perhaps worse still, leave a secret back-door
into the system so that they or their mates may get back in whenever they
want. This is often done for the challenge rather than for malicious
reasons. Use your resource for their needs or to spread those Phising emails so they come from you not them , gain your details for anonymous financial transactions on your accounts.
Virus on the other hand normally have malicious intent, to
destroy or corrupt data. Hackers look for weaknesses in computer systems,
things like Windows PCs connected to the Internet, almost too easy to
break into for some hackers to be interested. Virus normally come into the
system via email attachments, floppy disks, CDROMs DVD's Pen drives and other USB storage devices as well as from opening infected sites.
Defending against
one type of threat whilst ignoring the other is folly.
So both a quality firewall and anti virus protection are required.

Ttake a look at our firewall log for a single day March 3rd 2003, it prints to 5 pages which is typical of the
next 2 days we recorded. You can see who has made the attack and failed. During the hour of
16:00 there were 12 attacks, one every 5 minutes!
